the chief cornerstone ~ la piedra angular

Many times the Lord puts things in our hearts that He wants us to do. Occasionally, we see a situation that moves us to act. Every now and then we may even read something in the Word and decide to obey it. We can come up with some really good ideas!

King Saul came up with a really good plan, too. He convinced himself that surely God would be pleased by his keeping some animals to offer them to the Lord. Then he took actual disobedience further by stepping out of his area of authority and offering the animal sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel to arrive. The consequences were far-reaching and irreversible.

When we’re working to build in God’s kingdom, how do we avoid coming up with something that looks like the leaning tower of Pisa? Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:10, “According to the grace of God which is given to me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let every man take heed how he builds on it.”

Paul carefully put down a solid foundation which he identifies in verse 11 as Jesus Christ. We understand the relationship of firm support at the base of a structure to its strength! We may even be able to relate how essential it is for us to found our efforts on the Lord for them to endure. But, let’s dig in a bit deeper for a clearer picture of the place Jesus occupies in this lowest supporting layer of our spiritual house.

“And (we) are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20). Jesus is the principle part (cornerstone) of the strength (foundation) of our lives or anything we attempt to do.

Each of a cornerstone’s six faces is made up of four equal sides with four right angles, the surfaces perfectly level. The cornerstone was examined and verified prior to installation. Being the chief corner of the foundation causes the foundation to be square. The structure built on such a support will be vertical or plumb, a strong building if proper materials are used (1 Corintians 3:12, 13).

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, thus says the Lord God,’Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; he that believes shall not make haste (be ashamed).’ God, Himself, prepared and proved Jesus as our very foundation.

When we choose the approved-by-God basis to build our lives on and everything we do, we are effectively building the kingdom and receive eternel rewards. See 1 Corinthians 3:12-14. Or like Saul and the Pharisees, we can choose our own plan or our own way.

“The stone which the builders refused is become the head of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes (Psalm 118:22, 23.
