sifted like wheat

We always have the “problem” of why we are going through troubling circumstances. When it is obvious that we have caused the irritation ourselves- like after splurging on a shopping spree for ourself or a loved one- it is no less pressure, but at least we understand why money is tight! However, when as far as we know, we are doing everything correctly, it just does not seem fair for things not to go our way.

We have an adversary who wants to shake our faith, get our eyes off God, and cause us to stumble.

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. Luke 22:31

Picture a prospector panning for gold. There you are in that metal tin being rattled around against other hard objects. Not very comfortable, is it? What do you have your mind on? God’s goodness? Taking care of somebody in need? NO! You’re uncomfortable; you’re miserable. And all you can think about is getting out of the situation. There you have it, the why. Satan has succeeded in making you unproductive. And if he’s really successful, he’s gotten you to turn your back on or doubt God.

But, He has given us a promise to hold onto in Amos 9:9, For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations as grain in a sieve; yet shall not the least kernel fall upon the ground. Even when we have failed Him, falling short and not worthy to be called by His name, God will separate us from the dirt of our surroundings without losing a single one of us.
