Stains on your shirt pocket

My husband asked me how to remove ink stains from the pocket of one of his favorite shirts. After applying what I recommended once, he washed it. However, most of the ink still remained even though the shirt itself was clean! What he didn’t realize is that I would often pre-treat a stain many times before putting clothing in the wash and frequently would pre-treat and wash several times in order to get out a stubborn stain.

That’s a lot like the effects of sin and the old man evident in our lives after we’ve become a new creature in Christ Jesus. We’ve been made clean by the blood of Jesus, but we need repeated treatments to reduce the outward visible signs of who we once were.

Eph 5:26 (ASV) that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

We cannot be satisfied with that initial washing in our lives. We must continually and repeatedly apply God’s Word to our lives so that He has the material necessary to reproduce His image in our daily walk. It is important to bring our bodies into subjection and our thoughts into captivity by consistently reading the Bible and meditating on what we have read.

Ro 12:2 (ASV) And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

While we are feeding our inner man (spirit), our way of thinking and doing comes in line with the Scriptures and we look less and less like the world around us.

De 8:3 (ASV) And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by everything that proceedeth out of the mouth of Jehovah doth man live (emphasis mine). Jesus was quoting this Old Testament verse in Matthew 4:4 and Luke 4:4.

God’s Army – a Threefold cord

This post

mentioning the body’s white bloodcells from Our Daily Bread reinforced my own battlecry from January. This remarkable weapon in our body’s immune system formed part of a threefold cord in the army of God, fighting on my behalf!

Also called leukocytes or leucocytes, our white bloodcells, are produced and derived from a multipotent cell in the bone marrow known as ahematopoietic stem cells (courtesy Wikipedia).

Pr. 3:8 American Standard Version
It will be health to thy navel, And marrow to thy bones.

Important because of the DVT found in my left leg, platelets, whose function is to clot the blood, also derived from bone marrow.

As I was faced with my first chemotherapy, I searched for Bible verses to augment my faith and call to mind every time I wavered.

Joel 2:11  And Jehovah uttereth his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong that executeth his word; for the day of Jehovah is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

So, what is this threefold cord, this unstoppable army of the Lord that is working for me? These all-important white bloodcells, the medical treatment that I am receiving, and the all-powerful power of God joined with believing prayer!

(Eccl. 4:12) and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

The Chief End of Man

Worship 1 opening

Westminster Catechism

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

Purpose? Purpose.

We have a God-given purpose.

Is yours to glorify God?

Enjoy Him forever?

From time to time your aim may be to glorify the Lord in some task. It may occur regularly. But, is it your chief goal? Is that what you’ve planned to do today? Or are you sidetracked by the cares of this world? Deceitfulness of riches? Lust of other things? You don’t think so, huh?

What’s on your agenda today? Shopping… television… sports event…

What about your conversation – even at a church activity?

Have you determined to glorify God in all of the above?

Now let’s talk about enjoying Him forever? Do you look forward to spending time alone together on your date with God? If that’s all you had time for, would you be satisfied? Many have goals you want to accomplish before you go home to be with the Lord: get married, start a career, ministry, etc. You may have even thought that “heaven” could be a boring place! It takes time to rest in His presence. Communion with God is not about special effects, goose bumps, something new every couple of minutes. We’re used to fast-paced stimulation like commercials lasting about 30 seconds. How do you feel about sitting in the living room for 10-20 minutes doing nothing but waiting on God? Every day? That doesn’t include devotional reading, Bible study, prayer requests…

I bet you can sit on the porch under a full moon with your honey for longer than that!!! How would you feel if s/he jumped up every five minutes to do something else?

Serving God is fulfilling. Life with God is anything but boring. He gives us purpose.

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Wednesday is a terrible day to post

It’s a less active internet day…

Years ago when X moved out of state, s/he quietly moved into an apartment, sharing it with the person who would become their spouse. They did not broadcast it. They knew it was sin (and not the acceptable trend at that time). They chose to sin.

Today sin is not a popular word. No one wants to be told that what they are doing is wrong, not even Christians. It’s considered judgmental to impose your standards on anyone if only by mentioning your values. But, our job of being salt and light is not to let everyone know how much we disagree with them or advise them of what they are doing wrong. Ranting at people or berating them is not an effective way to get anyone to consider a different point of view nor share about the Kingdom of God.

Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

There was no authority; there was no king. But, we have an authority Who is King. And He gave us a ruler with which to measure right and wrong. This standard, the Bible, never changes. So, even if we think what we are doing is right, we can quickly ascertain – yes, it is, no, it isn’t – by going to the Word of God. As Christians, we must decide if we are going to submit ourselves to the correction and protection of obeying the contents of the Guidebook.

Many people evaluate their lives by the Ten Commandments. If we aren’t committing one of the “Big Ten,” we feel we are doing all right. However, Jesus used a plum line that ensured His house would be erected using 90 degree angles.

hate….. murder

lust…… fornication, adultery

For more suggestions, see Galatians 5:19-21.

It is the duty of a Christian counselor to expose sin for the bondage it is. When the United States or state government tells us we cannot inform someone what the Bible says, that is a time for civil disobedience. Shall we obey God or man (Acts 5:29)?
