The Chief End of Man

Worship 1 opening

Westminster Catechism

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

Purpose? Purpose.

We have a God-given purpose.

Is yours to glorify God?

Enjoy Him forever?

From time to time your aim may be to glorify the Lord in some task. It may occur regularly. But, is it your chief goal? Is that what you’ve planned to do today? Or are you sidetracked by the cares of this world? Deceitfulness of riches? Lust of other things? You don’t think so, huh?

What’s on your agenda today? Shopping… television… sports event…

What about your conversation – even at a church activity?

Have you determined to glorify God in all of the above?

Now let’s talk about enjoying Him forever? Do you look forward to spending time alone together on your date with God? If that’s all you had time for, would you be satisfied? Many have goals you want to accomplish before you go home to be with the Lord: get married, start a career, ministry, etc. You may have even thought that “heaven” could be a boring place! It takes time to rest in His presence. Communion with God is not about special effects, goose bumps, something new every couple of minutes. We’re used to fast-paced stimulation like commercials lasting about 30 seconds. How do you feel about sitting in the living room for 10-20 minutes doing nothing but waiting on God? Every day? That doesn’t include devotional reading, Bible study, prayer requests…

I bet you can sit on the porch under a full moon with your honey for longer than that!!! How would you feel if s/he jumped up every five minutes to do something else?

Serving God is fulfilling. Life with God is anything but boring. He gives us purpose.

The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
