How My Neuropathy is like YOUR Lack of Feeling

You probably get frustrated at stumbling blocks appearing from out of nowhere on your smooth-sailing road (I know I do). So, maybe my facing this obstacle will give you some weapons to use… a bulldozer might help… and make your struggle just a little bit easier.

I’ve experienced various side effects with each treatment. However, a particular one remains constant – a numbness in some of the fingertips and ends of my toes that is more commonly related to diabetes. During one stint, the lack of feeling was so severe, that it was difficult for me to type or put on a necklace or earrings.

In a flash, I decided, “Enough is enough!” So I went to my wardrobe and took out a jacket with –

15 Hooks & Eyes

NO, buttons, zippers, or snaps. Just 15 hooks & eyes. I put it on and slowly fastened e a c h one.

You may not think I accomplished much of a feat. To get an idea, if you’re a lefty, try writing a text while clicking the buttons of a keypad with your right hand. If you’re a righty, try it with your left hand. Okay, now imagine your attempt to close that many clasps or snaps! After five, and then another five, I wanted to give up, but I kept going.

What Neuropathy Will do to You

Injury to nerves interrupts communication between the brain and parts of the body and can impair muscle movement, prevent normal sensation in the arms and legs, etc., (and cause pain)..

Like my chemo, there are toxins flooding your whole body killing everything, damaging nerve endings in your life, too.

  • damage interupts communication between our hearts and heads
  • interrupts communication with God

Let’s deal with these items separately. The poisons injected in our lives often come from stressful or urgent situations life brings our way. Like a deer frozen by headlights on a dark highway, normal responses are deadened so that we can’t move or act consistently with the Word of God. In our head, waaaay in the back, we may know the right thing to do, but the pressure of the moment causes us to panic, make a wrong move, and compromise.

Point two, when we allow something deadly to invade we cannot hear or perceive direction from God when we need it most. It may be helpful for someone we trust to filter our knee jerk reactions through the counsel the Bible gives on how to proceed. At times, a drastic intervention through prayer is necessary to break a stronghold and open our eyes.

It is critical to not let the crisis that tries to consume us to be the driving force, but rather our trust in God and the peace and guidance He gives in the middle of our storm.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.

Your storm is no different than the disciples’. Jesus promised to take you to the other side! So take a second to step back, turn aside, and seek His face, remembering to focus on His light for your problem. It’s not too big for Him.

2 Co 1:4 who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (ASV)

How to Quickly Get Farther than YOUR Formula Takes You

What formula do you use? RememberIf W is work, F the force and x the distance .then

W = Fx?” **

Formulas, they are found and used everywhere. Baseball pitchers and hockey players are prime examples, i.e. a pitcher’s quirky delivery, hockey players letting their beards grow during the playoffs. Some definitions that accurately describe this phenomena:

> any fixed or conventional method for doing something

a customary or set form or method allowing little room for originality

> a set form (of words) for use in a ceremony or ritual

Like the above equation for work, we usually relate formulas to science or math. However, the realm of faith, is chock full of them, too! The following definitions confirm the fact, if you don’t believe me.

> a formal statement of religious doctrine.

> for indicating procedure to be followed, or for prescribed use on some ceremonial occasion.

In practice, many religions recite certain phrases in prayer as a ritual. We find the Jewish custom of touching the mezuzah on the doorjamb while entering or exiting a building. Some churches take communion in a formalized way; Christians may habitually “put on the armor of God” or pray for forgiveness several times day. If not careful, approaching God can become a strict adherence to traditional forms and observances. Among day-to-day activities include diligently relating to God personally and reading the Bible in order to learn Who He really is! Difficult to organize and squeeze in as it can be, the rewards are life-changing.

Devotional guides are published in many forms to help our quiet time be fresh and inspiring. The Lord also uses them to challenge us to spiritual growth and exercise discipline, for example this excerpt from Day 1 of  21 Days Seeking the Lord .

In prayer, ask the Lord of the harvest to plow your heart, to remove the obstacles, and prepare you for His planting. Tell Him you are willing.Thank Him for His grace and mercy.

Let’s relate this definition of formula to a common expression.

> a set form of words, as for stating or declaringsomething definitely or authoritatively,

How does this apply to me?

Plead the blood, under the blood, covered by the blood…

Commonly declared fervently, there is meaning to these words, but the expression is not a talisman or good luck charm as some use it. If we want its effect in our lives we need to know the proper way to apply them.

AS F.B. Meyer said in The Secret of Guidance,(included in my Kindle volume of The F.B. Meyer Collection 11 Classic Works),

But our standing in Jesus changes not. It is like Himself the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. It did not originate in us, but in everlasting love, which, foreseeing all that we should be, loved us notwithstanding all. It has not been purchased by us, but by His precious blood, which pleads for us as mightlily and successfully when we can hardly claim it, as when our faith is most buoyant.

Jesus’ blood was poured out on the mercy seat in Heaven to cleanse me from sin and put me in right standing with God. We see a type of this in the first “passover” when the children of Israel put blood from the innocent, sacrificed lamb on their doorposts so that the death angel would pass over their homes. Every other household received judgment, the death of the firstborn.

And no doubt or depression can for a single moment affect or alter our acceptance with God through the blood of Jesus, which is an eternal fact.

wrote Meyer. Hence…I’m standing on the blood, when feeling condemned. So, our las definition is quite appropriate!

> a conventionalized statement intended to express some fundamental truth or principle especially as a basis for negotiation or action

Finally, according to Meyer,

Cease to consider how you feel, and build on the immovable rock or what Jesus is, and has done, and is doing, and will do for you, world without end.

When the Rug’s Been Pulled Out from Under You

Working opposing muscle groups

Just because one set of muscles is strong from using it does not mean that all are equally toned. You may have heard that after working out one group like abs that it’s good to exercise a converse section such as your back.

While I’ve had much experience and developed a great deal of patience in waiting on God and trusting Him with finances and providing many needs, I recently faced going around a familiar mountain yet once again. This time I decided that enough is enough. I am not taking one more step around its well-worn path!

Deuteronomy 2 (ASV)

verse 2 And Jehovah spake unto me, saying,

verse 3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

How long do you want to trudge around the same circle? Have you decided that you’ve had enough or are you going to continue in the same rut? God will instruct you where to make your turn. He did me! But, it was not easy to hear…

Submitting myself and inclining my ear to God’s Word in the familiar, successful area was a piece of cake. Did I really want to humble myself now and stop making excuses why this time it couldn’t work, why God would not be faithful to handle this other problem and trust? Try to deal with this on my own strength? Or would I stop the ring-around-the-rosie stronghold in my believing and take the Creator at His Word?

He called me to turn aside to hear Him and “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10). So, I took a step back to look “objectively’ at the repeat of a potential crisis. With the help of some God-placed prompts I took the position if no one else does, I WILL cooperate. Too difficult, you say? Only by wavering in your resolution. That’s why we must arm ourselves with the “Thus saith the Lord” that He’s given for the situation and bring our thoughts into captivity to It.

Tammy Maltby says in a book* she wrote together with Anne Buchanan, “We have to choose how we’re going to live when we can’t see God.”

NOTE: a + circumference

I walk a short distance around a park, but in my musings often loose track of how many circles I’ve made. It made sense to choose a different point of reference than my starting point so that when I come to it X times I would remember the number. On one occasion I looked up on approaching my landmark to see police tape around some basketball courts. Did that appear since my arrival? No. Another trip along the path and I noticed noises coming from someone’s backyard that I didn’t hear before.

By changing how you look at things, don’t be surprised what God can show you!

FYI (in case you’re looking down your nose at my little jaunts)

4 of 6 post-op chemos completed!!! YAY!!!

Last Thursday’s treatment was the quickest, smoothest-flowing session to date. Since I’m not really an ICU patient, some of the nurses relax their procedures with me a bit, like not pricking my fingers to check blood sugar as much and ‘loosing my tether’ so I can get up to go to the bathroom without them coming to disconnect me from all the monitors, etc. The tumor marker, CA125, lowered from 18 to 16 (below 30 is normal). My blood counts were good causing my heart rate not to be a bit high like the previous time. Besides returning home promptly on Friday, the best part was NO BLOOD WAS DRAWN the whole time…

What is more, I don’t need to go to the lab to monitor COUmadin dose until Sept. 28. One whole month!

It “feels” good to be on the down side of the mountain.

Heb 4:15 For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. (ASV)

And He did (come down).

There’s not much more debilitating than to face an unchangeable situation with the sense that no one understands or supports you. But, we have the assurance that God indeed understands. He walked in our footsteps. He hasn’t abandoned us. He is willing and able to act on our behalf. And in the fullness of time (i.e. Gal. 4:4) He will put His plan into action.

In the movie Bruce Almighty, a mere mortal is endowed with God’s daunting task of handling the world’s problems and answering prayer. Chaos ensues as he grants everyone’s contradictory requests. Since God created an orderly universe, He has a schematic for running the system He created and does not implement haphazard plans. We can rest in the confidence that Jehovah Jireh has “seen ahead” and made provision, thus relieving us of the responsibility of working things out on our own.

Now on to the task at hand of finding new owners for some really cool, vintage estate items left by an elderly relative!
