Working With Us???

Guatemala 2016

Php 4:10 (WEB) But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.

Sowing in famine

I’ve received provision in various and unexpected ways!

The pride of man would say, “It’s me who got it done!”, “I did it my way!”, OR “I can do it on my own!”

But, I cannot say any of those things, nor do I want to. I would not be here today without divine intervention.

Last week in the devotional “Our Daily Bread” I read about financial ruin resulting from the expenses of a life-threatening illness. I’m thankful to say that this is not our case. The Lord provided for our medical needs, food and living expenses, even maintenance and insurance for our car!

Obviously, we did not pass these many months without a degree of suffering or discomfort, but we have been well-cared for. And God used the Body of Christ so that we honestly did not feel any lack. We even were able to give and bless other people.

1Tim. 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (WEB)

A big bank account or house should not be our goal.

Dt. 8:18 But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day. (WEB)

"But I'm barely getting by!!!"

Do what you can…

Dt. 15:7

If there be with you a poor man, one of your brothers, within any of your gates in your land which Yahweh your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother; (WEB)

Mt. 5:42 Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you. (WEB)

2Cor. 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work. (WEB)

Steve Main said in A God-Made Millionaire (Kindle Edition location 72-75):

Looking down on wealthy individuals is a popular pastime in our country. Many people look down their noses at people with money and make accusations about their character. Many of the people who do this are insecure, lack faith and are afraid. Fear racks them and causes them to rationalize why money is bad.

Yet some of these same individuals look to the wealthy do take care of them OR strive to be like them. If the situation was reversed, how generous and giving would they (WE) be.

Heaping up for ourselves?

1Tim. 6:9

But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction. (WEB)

We do not have to labor to get rich! When we are God-led and good stewards of the resources entrusted to us, the world economy does not matter.

Gen. 26:1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar…Gen. 26:12 Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him. (WEB)

What does God really require of our resources?

You Can’t Outgive God

Nobody can!!!

2 Cor. 9:7

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver. (WEB)

Paul went to “the Church” for help for the poor in Jerusalem and other places.

You see, God gave us the job of caring for each other’s needs, not the government! The Greek word for cheerful is hilaros which means propitious or merry, i.e. prompt or willing.

Dt. 15:7

If there be with you a poor man, one of your brothers, within any of your gates in your land which Yahweh your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother; (WEB)

But I don’t have enough for my own needs!”

Really!!??? What about the 12 t-shirts you have sitting on a pile or the five pairs of jeans hanging in your closet that you don’t wear any more?

Pr. 11:24

There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty. (WEB)

I can’t think of anything more satisfying then to hear “That’s just what I needed” when I have taken an unused item that has been laying around the house and passed it on to someone else.

I can hear someone out there saying to him/herself: “Why should I give to you anymore if you’re giving stuff/money away?” Well, giving is not restricted only to the rich!

Pr. 22:9

He who has a generous eye will be blessed; for he shares his food with the poor. (WEB)

Chaplains work with Emergency services/fire departments

Chaplains working with emergency services personnel provide the same kind of support as do chaplains working with law enforcement, and sometimes face great danger, working with the wounded in often very perilous surroundings.
At the scene of the September 11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center, for example, Franciscan friar and New York City Fire Department Chaplain Fr. Mychal F. Judge lost his life to flying debris from the South Tower when he re-entered the North Tower lobby of the World Trade Center, shortly after administering last rites to a wounded firefighter.[1]

We will be moving up our workshop on Diffusing Volatile Situations and Trauma Debriefing from May to April. Send us your request to be included in the invitations!

freedom

Because I refuse to be bound by man’s rules, my husband often jokes about my unconventional spirit! And while it’s true I’m the first to jump off the bandwagon (even a Christian one) when everyone else is jumping on, I am not a rebel. At least not in the traditional sense.

Icons James Dean and Elvis Presley challenged social norms in the ’50s. The hippies in the ’60s resisted the “Establishment.” And the Jesus Movement in the ’70s rose up out of a disatisfaction with the rigidity of the denominational Church.

Freedom from bondage

FYI: Following “the law” does not produce righteousness

Gal. 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh? (WEB)

Even though we know in our heads that we haven’t done anything to earn our place in heaven, sometimes we feel: like we’re not doing enough, like we cannot possible be acceptable just as we are, like maybe we need to do something to merit God answering our prayers or paying attention to us.

Gal. 3:11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.” (WEB)

It is very important for us to balance faith and service.

Rom. 7:6 But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter. (WEB)

Because we’ve been made new creatures, we are no longer bound to keeping religious rules through good conduct. But because our hearts have been made new and His laws are written on our hearts, we no longer commit the same offenses. Our natures are changed so that we are not limited to pleasing God by our actions. We know it is faith that pleases our Lord. Then enters the dilemma.

Jas. 2:18 Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. (WEB

We are freed from dead religious works and keeping legalistic laws. Yet God expects us to show our faith (convictions) by what we do. We need to be “men” of integrity.

1Cor. 3:12 But if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or stubble; 13 each man’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself will test what sort of work each man’s work is. (WEB)

A man once told me that I needed to go help at a kid’s camp… On another occasion a missionary lamented to me about a certain church not supporting his work…

God doesn’t “call” each of us to work in the same portion of His field. We can’t do everything, so we need to determine where we fit in most aptly and what our motives are. Then we will find ourselves building with materials that withstand any scrutiny, any evaluation, even God’s quality control.

Let’s plow/sow/water where the Lord assigned us to contribute, then

For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. (Heb 4:10 WEB)

Chaplains in Education

Educational chaplains assist school communities to support the spiritual, social, and emotional well-being of their students In religious schools the role of the chaplain tends to be educational and liturgical. In secular schools the role of the chaplain tends to be that of a mentor and a provider of pastoral care services. Chaplains provide care for students by supporting them during times of crisis or need. Many chaplains run programs to promote the welfare of students, staff, and parents including programs to help students deal with grief, anger or depression. School chaplains can also liaise with external organisations providing support services for the school.[1]

For higher education, chaplains are found on many college and university campuses. Sometimes they work directly for the institution or as representatives of separate organizations that specifically work to support students. Chaplains can supervise coordinated efforts promotinging spiritual, ethical, religious, and political and cultural exchange, and the promotion of service. In the United States, the National Association of College and University Chaplains works to support the endeavors of many of these chaplains, helping chaplains minister to the individual faith of students, faculty, and staff, while promoting inter-religious understanding.[2]

With violence increasing on-site at every academic level and suicide rates on the rise, educational chaplains are proving to be valuable assets to administrators and first responders alike.
