ebbing tide faith

faith in/out

For a while now, I’ve been doing my morning “devotions” using Bible translations on my tablet. However, recently I’ve had the urge to go back to my paper study Bible. It has center column references to direct me to related verses, words, or a chain of passages about that word/topic. Very helpful in deepening one’s effort to acquire knowledge.

I started reading Breaking Free: Discover the Victory of Total Surrender by Beth Moore to prepare for divine deliverances (see Isaiah 58) during the “January Fast.” On page 2, she talked about Gideon, found in Judges 6. So I went to the Scofield Reference Bible I’ve had since 1984. (Carl bought it to replace the one I got in 1976 when I became a Christian.)

Jg 6:23 Yahweh said to him, Peace be to you; don’t be afraid: you shall not die. (WEB)

This is marvelous to me, because I had underlined the last part of the verse and jotted a note:

fear not; thou shalt not die

note: i.e. June 13

The date June 13 referred to a word I received in 2011 about an attack coming on my life-a dual warning about our December 9 carjacking in Guatemala that year and 2015’s cancer threat. For an example of a dual prophecy in the Bible, take a look at Isaiah 7:14 which is one of many OT prophecies about the coming Messiah.

Side note: Messianic Prophecy is one of my fav studies which I’ll elaborate a bit on in my soon-to-be-published Prepare Him Room, a booklet of 31 Old Testament verses and their New Testament fulfillment that can be used as a monthly devotional.

ebbing tide faith

…it goes in and out. Not just yours, everybody’s! Including pastors, Bible teachers, and ministers. The above verse in Judges 6:23 (not a frequently read book) was underlined in that Bible sometime in 2011. When I read it and highlighted the verse a quickening took place in my heart alluding to God’s admonition to be vigilant! Today it’s like a vitamin fortifying my faith so that “having done all to stand,” I stand firm.

YOU can, too.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living, and active [quick and powerful, KJV], and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (WEB)

I don’t/cannot stand on the force of my own strength. I need the Word of God. Jesus, Himself, fought with God’s Word (Luke 4). You must, too.

Neither shall the flame kindle upon you…

… I would have imagined this was an excerpt from a current periodical, not ©1993.

Another indicator of the sad state of our worship habits are the attitudes of people who do attend church.

…One reason for this is the sad state of preaching in America. Most pastors are not really proclaiming the Word; they’re dishing up predigested pablum from current devotional magazines, or they are expounding their favorite psychological theories. But, “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit …and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12). When Jesus Christ is preached with the power of the Holy Spirit, people can’t help but stay awake! They become aware of what the Bible has to say to them. Why, they might even have to leave the room because they can’t stand the conviction they feel! The fact that this seldom happens in our churches is a bitter commentary on the shoddiness of American preaching, as well as on the indifference of the American churchgoer.

Another indicator of the sad state of American worship is the ineffectuality of most prayers. Why aren’t more prayers answered? Has God stopped working in the lives of His people? Aren’t Christians praying steadfastly enough? Aren’t they praying aright? I suspect the problem isn’t with God, it’s with us.

Lester Sumrall, Names of God

(New Kensington, PA: Whitaker House, 1993), 41-42.

There’s nothing I can add to that!!! Except a call to action. Let’s be a people of God’s Word, in prayer and in deed.

My Silver Bunker Suit

*There are three basic types of these aluminized suits:

  • Approach suit
  • Proximity suit
  • Entry suit

What am I going to write about now? Now that “death” is no longer working in me?

God’s Word and how we need to activate it in our lives!

While in that hospital room Jan. 5-14, the Lord spoke to my heart two verses in Isa. 43:1,2.

Although I would be walking through fire and floods I would come out unharmed; God was with me…

Remarkable, the suffering of My 2015 Job Experience was relatively minor in comparison to the extreme possibilities and what others we know have actually gone through! (details reserved for future blogging)

In walking through the fire you could get scared as the flames lap around and at you. You’ve seen images of flood waters rising around people in their cars, too. How would you feel? Our most “spiritual” example is the failure of Peter to look to Jesus as he walked toward Him on the water.

We think, ‘What a wimp! I’d never be like that.’

Quit your blustering and boasting. You sound just like Peter before he denied Christ three times. But, you flounder, too, at the slightest sign of trouble. At least Peter’s life was at stake. If he didn’t “make it” he was a goner. Go ahead-let’s hear your excuse…

So, as my daughter says, ‘We know the spiritual answer.’ In this case? ‘Spiritual’ as it may be, it is the right answer. Look to Jesus. Keep your eyes on Him.

Just our luck! He’s not here to grab us and pull us into the boat like Peter. Just our luck! He did leave us His Word.

Many versions express the latter part of verse two in Isaiah as

neither shall the flame kindle upon me.

How does that apply to me, you might ask…

Well, by showing you how it is working for me, you might get an idea! There are a few consequences to my treatment that remain in my body: i.e. a couple lesions on one lung, a nodule and lesion left on the other, that need to be observed over time. We all know that the medical community does not operate on faith, and will not declare me cured until at least five years cancer-free. That’s where keeping my eyes on Jesus comes into play: the Word spoken to my heart (rhema) in that hospital room.

neither shall the flame kindle upon me

Then there’s the spector of recurrence.

neither shall the flame kindle upon me.

Let’s not be like Peter. Let’s keep our eyes off of the waves!

Heb 12:2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, (WEB)

Paul said it best, When I am weak, then I am strong. We can only do it through Him.
